Hinduism and Darwin
New questions, new responses
Darwin’s ideas about evolution were published in 1859, which is less than 200 years ago. The major religions we know of today have histories that are much much longer. As the idea of evolution became more established, scholars who study religions began to grapple with the challenge of comparing Darwin’s ideas with traditional religious beliefs. So far we have looked at the kinds of answers that scholars and scientists in Christianity support.
Jay Lakhani is a Hindu and a scientist. He has studied the beliefs set out by the Indic traditions (Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism) and thought deeply about whether the claims made by these religions conflict with Darwin’s ideas. In this video, he discusses his conclusions.
